Are we Preventing Heart Disease?
By: Shane Ellison M.Sc. All rights Copyright © 2004 Are we preventing heart disease? Or are we simply throwing our money and health down the pharmaceutical drain for cholesterol lowering drugs that do not prevent heart disease? From the first time that a cholesterol lowering drug is swallowed, most users rest well thinking that they are going to prevent this pandemic killer. Rarely do consumers question the effectiveness or dangers associated with their cholesterol lowering drug. And why should they? There is more money spent on advertising the so-called benefits of these drugs than on researching them. Marketing repetition over the last 30 years has not led to a more informed America but rather a more medicated America, where doctors and patients blindly ingest these so-called "magic bullets". For proof we can look to the paradox where despite the popularity of these drugs and their ability to lower cholesterol levels, not a single one of them has ever been shown to prevent early death (overall mortality). Not One! For instance, the newest drug Crestor plummeted cholesterol levels, yet failed to show any effectiveness as could be seen by a 0% decrease in total mortality rates among users. Yet Crestor, and sister drugs like Lipitor, are being recommended for use among the young, old, male and female! The truth be told, cholesterol lowering drugs, as shown in the scientific literature, are not only ineffective, but among the most toxic drugs ever to be released for human consumption. Therefore, logic dictates that that those using cholesterol lowering drugs may want to reconsider their preventative efforts, before it's too late. This begins by pondering the question, "Am I really preventing heart disease?" Answering this question guarantees that we do not let marketing hype supersede logic and scientific fact. Ultimately, this will lead to proven methods of preventing America's number one killer.
