Medical Fraud
By Laura Quarantiello © 2004 Tiare Publications Group As the population ages the number one concern of many Americans is their health. Ever resourceful con artists attempt to turn that concern into profit. Ads promoting quick and easy miracle cures abound, often based on what are claimed to be secret or ancient or newly discovered remedies. Desperate people fall head over pocketbook for these claims, only to find that the cure is not a cure at all. In recent years the Justice Department has tripled the number of FBI special agents assigned to health care fraud. Some common health-related scams include remedies for arthritis, cancer, weight loss, baldness, and aging. Most of these so-called cures are untested and unproven, despite claims to the contrary. Some of these `remedies" could even be harmful. The only person who should be giving you medical advice and prescribing medicine for you is your own doctor. . Be careful of the "free" tests offered at senior centers, malls and drug stores. These tests are often not free at all, but are billed to your insurance company. You'll know that's the case if you are asked for your insurance or Medicare number. In a related vein: the sun, the elements, time and age conspire to inflict wrinkles on all of us eventually. Like death and taxes, wrinkles are inevitable. Some products found on the drug store shelves claim to reduce or even eliminate those unwanted lines. Is this truth or hoax? Most such creams can eliminate wrinkles - but only temporarily. The oils in the compound smooth and moisten the skin and cause a slight, harmless irritation. This irritation causes the skin to swell slightly, which "eliminates" the wrinkle. But once the swelling is gone the lines reappear. While these creams haven't been proven harmful, some ingredients taken in large doses or over a long period of time may indeed be harmful to your health. Check with your doctor before you try anything. Laura Quarantiello hates criminals and the crimes they commit. Her book "On Guard" can help you minimize the risk you family faces from criminal elements. Get more information at: www.tiare.com/onguard.htm
