Carnitine and the Weight Loss Cure
by Barrett Niehus We have all heard that our diets today may be deficient in the nutrients necessary to promote good health, but these deficiencies may actually be contributing to our expanding waist line. It is true that much of the processed foods that we eat are missing essential nutrients, but can a deficiency in some of these ingredients make us fatter? Well, the answer is yes. There are certain compounds missing in our diet that are actually making us gain weight. Which compounds are they? Well the most significant is Carnitine. L- Carnitine to be exact. This is a naturally occurring amino acid that is found in meats and protein. It has been called the body's "Fat Carburetor" and controls the amount of fat we store and burn for energy in the body. What does Carnitine do? L-Carnit! ine is an amino acid that is used in our body to control how fat is stored. The compound acts like a taxicab moving fat from our fat cells and into our muscles. The molecules of fat attach themselves to molecules of Carnitine and are taken out of the blood stream and into the energy centers of our cells where the fat can be burned as energy. Because Carnitine controls the amount of fat that can be used as energy in the body, it has a significant role in maintaining a healthy body weight. Essentially, our dietary deficiency in this protein is actually making us fatter. Why are we deficient? Well, some Carnitine is made by our body, but we get most of it from our diet. It is found in most of our protein sources including meat and dairy. However, because it is extremely heat sensitive we destroy it in our food through cooking before we get to eat it. The result is a deficiency in the one compound that will actually keep us thin. What does this mean ! to me? Have you seen the advertisements for "new" weight los! s produc ts with "Carni" in the title? Many of these products claim to be new and revolutionary, but in reality they are providing you with a nutrient that should already be in your diet. Do they work? Yes. However, diet products are short term answers to a long term problem. The most effective way to make sure that we maintain an adequate level of Carnitine in our bloodstream is through supplementation. Dietary Carnitine supplements can be purchased through any health food store and should be part of your daily regime to continually fight the battle of the bulge.
