A quick glance in the yellow page section of virtually any phone book can be a daunting experience when it comes to selecting a dentist. With so many claims that seem similar how do you know which dentist has the best experience and is suited for your personal needs? Fact is, there are general dentists and there are specialists. There are low priced dentists and those that charge more. There are "get em in and get em out" dentists and there are those who have boutique practices where you actually look forward to visiting with them. Although many people choose a dentist when they have a toothache or some sort of an emergency, developing a good relationship with a dental professional before you need them is the best route to take. How do I choose the right dentist? An inquiry with friends and coworkers can often lead you to an excellent dentist. Check with more than one person to see whom they recommend. You can also check with your local dental society or state dental board. Take time to interview your potential dentist. What is your first impression with the way their phone is answered, how you are greeted when you visit their office and how patient they are when answering your questions? Some dentists are more of an in and out type of professional, while others will take plenty of time to answer your questions and make you feel comfortable. You have to make the decision of who is best for you based on your own needs. As you interview your potential dentist, find out what credentials and memberships they hold. Although not important in some industries, when it comes to your dental care, you want to make sure that you are selecting someone who is highly qualified. Find out how much continuing education they have. Do they have the bare minimum, or have they gone above and beyond what is required? Be sure to let your potential dentist know about any concerns or fears you have. If they discount your concerns, you will definitely want to find someone else. There are ample choices when selecting your dentist, so select someone who cares about you as a person. Should You Select Your Dentist Based Solely on Insurance Coverage? This is an area of much debate. The fact is, simply because a dentist is placed on an insurance companies list of preferred dentist doesn't necessarily mean you will receive the treatment you want or deserve. Although not always the case, some dentists who are on the preferred dentist list receive only minimal training and may not provide the type of customer service you deserve. Additionally, you insurance coverage may not be all it is cracked up to be. You may think all your services are covered, when in reality, there may be very stringent guidelines on what you can and cannot have done that is covered by insurance. Before making a decision based solely on whom your insurance company recommends, do your research. Utilize the steps outlined above to determine if this is the route you choose to take. More and more everyday, it is being determined and understood how essential dental health and care is to a person's overall health. When selecting your provider, choose someone you feel comfortable with and you trust. Although many people make their decision based on price alone, the question you need to ask yourself is, "How much is my long-term health really worth?" Let your answer be a guiding force when securing the services of your dental professional. Dr. Scott Kiser has been practicing general dentistry in Salt Lake City, Utah for over 20 years.
