The National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the American Cancer Society (ACS) announce the second biennial cancer survivorship research conference, "Cancer Survivorship: Pathways to Health After Treatment," which will take place in Washington, D.C., on June 17-18, 2004. The conference will bring together researchers from across several fields, including healthcare professionals, community-based advocates, state public health planners, and cancer survivors and their families, to focus on innovative research findings and to network with multidisciplinary experts who are committed to the advancement of survivorship research.

The agenda will include the following highlights:

- NCI Director Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D., a cancer survivor, will discuss survivorship research supported by NCI. He also will announce NCI grant awards that will be made to over a dozen national researchers to support cutting-edge survivorship research.

- ABC News Correspondent Sam Donaldson will share his thoughts about cancer, survivorship, and his personal experience as a survivor of melanoma in his talk titled "A View From Washington."

- For the first time, the survivorship conference will feature a Survivor-Researcher Mentor Program, sponsored by NCI, ACS, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). The program provides scholarships for 20 emerging leaders in the cancer advocacy community to attend the conference and to interact with researchers. The mentorship program will allow advocates to learn firsthand about emerging advances and opportunities in cancer survivorship science, and also will provide a forum for researchers to meet and talk with those people whose lives are directly affected by cancer. Scholarship recipients will prepare a summary of the meeting, which will be disseminated by various organizations including NCI, ACS and LAF.

- LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., M.D., chair of the President's Cancer Panel and professor of surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., will discuss recommendations made in the recently released President's Cancer Panel's 2003-2004 annual report, titled "Living Beyond Cancer: Finding a New Balance," and its companion piece, "Living Beyond Cancer: A European Dialogue."
