A recent survey of twenty-six Philadelphia-area health clubs conducted by CardioReady® revealed only three clubs are prepared to help save their members from sudden cardiac death by having automated external defibrillators and trained personnel on-site. The industry serves a population that needs access to defibrillation. Most new members are over 35, and the greatest risk for cardiac arrest is among men over 45 and women over 55. While exercising, especially aerobically, the incidence of SCA is greatly enhanced. Further, it is important to note that nearly one-fourth of all Americans age 35 and older have some form of cardiovascular disease, which again raises the odds of experiencing sudden cardiac death. States CardioReady® President and CEO, Matthew Barrer, "While this study was limited in scope it is a fair reflection of the industry at large. But, with new legislation emerging in Illinois, Rhode Island and Michigan, clubs may soon be required to have equipment and trained staff on hand. It does not take much to realize people should exclude any gym that is not prepared." Area fitness center, Aquatic and Fitness Center(s), isn't waiting to be mandated to save lives at its four area facilities. States its President, Matt Littman, "Our commitment is to the health and well- being of our members. They come here to get and stay healthy. We feel more prepared and believe our members will appreciate our dedication to them." Adds Barrer, "The general public is beginning to recognize that having an AED on-site where they work and play is a necessity and will choose where they workout because of such services." The well-respected medical journal Circulation of the American Heart Association concurs, and lists on-site AEDs and trained personnel as a huge plus in its health checklist for people who want to join a fitness facility. And, local health expert, Dr. Rob Danoff, recently stated in his Discovery Health article that it is imperative people choose a facility where safety is a standard practice. With hundreds of thousands of American's dying from SCA each year, access to defibrillation is proving to be a necessity. According to a study of public access to defibrillation published in November 2003 by the National Institute of Health, access to defibrillators in public places and people who are trained to use them doubles the survival rate for victims of SCA.
